KYB, identity & AML coverage in Germany

Germany pairs the Handelsregister commercial register with the Transparenzregister beneficial-ownership register — strong structured data, but split across two systems and largely in German.

German KYB rests on two registers. The Handelsregister holds the commercial record — legal form, registered seat, managing directors (Geschäftsführer), and capital — while the Transparenzregister, now a full register rather than a fallback, holds beneficial-ownership data. Effective onboarding has to reconcile both, handle German-language filings, and account for the GmbH and AG structures that dominate the market.

Business verification (KYB)

First Mile Labs retrieves the Handelsregister extract (Handelsregisterauszug) for legal form, registered seat, share capital, and the appointed managing directors, then reconciles it against the Transparenzregister to establish wirtschaftlich Berechtigte (beneficial owners). German filings are processed in the original language, and the registered details are cross-checked against the application form so any divergence is surfaced.

Identity verification (IDV)

German directors and beneficial owners are verified using the Personalausweis (national identity card) or passport, with document authentication, liveness, and face-match. The Personalausweis carries an eID function that the platform can leverage where available; non-German nationals resident in Germany are verified via their Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit).

Sanctions, PEP & adverse media (AML)

German entities and individuals are screened against the EU consolidated sanctions list, UN, and OFAC, alongside PEP and adverse-media checks. Screening is continuous and feeds the same risk model and EDD triggers used across the case.

From our compliance team

The recurring trap in Germany is treating the Handelsregister as the whole picture. It tells you who manages the company, not who ultimately owns it — that lives in the Transparenzregister, and the two do not always agree. We always reconcile both and treat a mismatch between managing directors and registered beneficial owners as a signal worth investigating, not a clerical detail.

Germany onboarding — FAQ

Why does German KYB need two registers?

The Handelsregister records the commercial facts — legal form, seat, capital, and managing directors — but beneficial ownership is held separately in the Transparenzregister. First Mile Labs reads both and reconciles them so the management and ownership pictures are consistent.

Are German-language filings handled automatically?

Yes. Register extracts and documents are processed in the original German, with the extracted fields cross-checked against the applicant's declaration. Discrepancies are flagged with the source text highlighted for analyst review.

How are German individuals verified?

Primarily via the Personalausweis or passport with document authentication, liveness, and face-match. The Personalausweis eID function is used where available, and residents who are non-nationals are verified through their Aufenthaltstitel.
